Profile for rel and rev attribute
A proposal for values for the rel and rev attributes. Some few values are also
applicable to the attributes class and id. All these values where collected
from the internet, mainly from proposals from the
w3c. Some of the original proposals where
removed because they conflict with other proposals. These are mainly the
attributre values parent
, child
and sibling
,
which conflict with the XFN microformat. The values presented here may be used for
the global site structure and for navigating between the different parts of that site.
This document is a metadata profile in the sense of the HTML specification, in section 7.4.4.3 Meta data profiles, as refined by XMDP.
- Alternate

Points to an alternate version of the document. Combined with the hreflang attribute it points to a translated version. Combined with the type attribute it points to a different format.
- Appendix

Points to an appendix of a document set.

Points to the author of the page. This is similar to "made", but the autohr is responsible for the content, where "made" is mainly reponsible for the technical aspect.
- Begin

Points to the first of a sequence of documents.
- Bookmark

Points to a local point (in the current page) or to an important entry point of a page.
A page can contain more than one bookmark. The first bookmark may be the target for the socalled skiplink.
- Chapter

Points to a chapter within a document set.
- Contents

Points to the table of contents. This is a synonym for ToC.
- Copyright

Points to the copyright statement for this page.
- Definition

Points to a definition of a term.
- Disclaimer

Points to a legal disclaimer.
- Editor

Points to the editor of the page. The meaning is similar to that of author.
- End

Points to the last document within a sequence of documents.
- First

Points to the first in a sequence of documents. It is a synonym for begin and start.
- Footnote

Points to a footnote.
- Glossary

Points to a glossary.
- Help

Points to a help page which may contain additional information or links to further information.
- Index

Points to the index of the site or section.
- Last

Points to the last document in a sequence of documents.
- License

Points to a license for the current document, as defined by Creative Commons.
- Made

Points to who made the page..
The maker and the author may be different persons. The author is mainly responsible for the content, while the maker is responsible for technically making the page.
- Meta

Points to some meta data for the document. This is a general mechanism to point to any type of external meta data.
Format and type of the meta data are further specified by the type and title attribute.

Points to a navigation aid like navigation bars, navigation lists and the like..
- Next

Points to the next document in a sequence of documents.
- Origin

Points to the entry point of the site. This is a synonym for top.
Sometimes "home" is used for this, but the w3c explicitely discourages that, since "home" should be reserved for the "home" button of the user agent (browser). This target so is not defined by the web author, but by the user.
- Prev

Points to the previous document in a sequence of documents.
Some browsers also support the synonym "previous"
- Publisher

Points to the publisher of the document. May be different from author.
- Search

Points to the search feature for the site..
- Section

Points to a section within the site.
- Start

Points to the first document in a sequence of documents. This is a synonym for first.
- Subsection

Points to a subsection within a section.
- ToC

Points to the table of contents. This is a synonym for contents.
- Top

Points to the entry point of the site. This is a synonym for origin.
- Up
-
For documents within a hierarchy of documents this points to a parent document (if used with the rel attribute) or to a child document(if used with the rev attribute).
